California – Red Blend Wine

Cooper’s Hawk – California Riviera – Santa Barbara County – Non-Vintage

Price: $28.99 at Cooper’s Hawk Restaurant

I was wary of this red wine blend from Cooper’s Hawk, as I am about some non-vintage wines. Their California Riviera was their April Wine of the Month, and it came highly recommended by their wine shop attendant.

The color was a deep ruby red with a hint of rust, a beautiful shade that looks like it was painted into my glass. The legs are slow to run down, indicating a higher amount of alcohol.

The first scent reminded me of being “clean” or new. It reminded me of stepping into a new car with its rich leather, but it was hard to ignore the smell of alcohol. A closer look at the label shows a 14.5% alcohol level, slightly higher than the average of 14%.

First sips revealed to me a very deep berry flavor. It was surprisingly light and smooth. There was also a different bit of a flavor that I could not place, but made me think of maize. Getting deeper into the berry flavors, I was able to discern red berries like cherry, raspberry and cranberry. It was a very fruity taste.

From the first glass, this bottle had either low or no tannins. I found it very easy to drink, light enough to go with any meal, even something as light as a salad with some protein. But the California Riviera does not have a lot of depth or character, though it is not bland. It was similar to Pinot Noir with far less definition.

I would recommend this wine if you’re looking for a good, but generic, light red wine. But it wouldn’t compete with other wines if you’re looking for more characteristics or definition. The downside is that for a generic red blend, there are cheaper options out there. I’m also less than enthusiastic about no vintage designation.

Score: 7.8

I’m Jackie

After spending more than a decade tasting wines from all around the world, I decided to taste the various wines made in the United States. Each state in the country makes wine, and I will attempt to taste one from each and review them in this blog. I’m not a professional wine drinker, so my reviews will be based on how I liked each bottle of American wine, versus a professional review.
